Getting From Suvarnabhumi to Central Bangkok

Rail and Skytrain, taxi, Grab and private cars, and which one suits your part of the city.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 31 km east of Bangkok. The cheapest way in is the Airport Rail Link, 15 to 45 THB and about 26 to 30 minutes to Phaya Thai, then the BTS. A metered taxi costs the meter plus a 50 THB surcharge and tolls. A private sedan for one or two travelers was $32.72 per car, tolls included, when we checked on 12 October 2026.

Pick by your bags and your hotel. With light bags and a hotel near a BTS or MRT station, take the train. With suitcases or children, a hotel in the old town or by the river, or a late landing, take a metered taxi from the Level 1 queue or book a car before you fly.

Two people on the train plus a short BTS ride spend about 150 to 200 THB between them. A taxi to the same hotel costs a few hundred baht more and stops at the door. For three or four travelers with luggage, a car is easier and close in cost per person.

The options one by one

The Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1 of the terminal (our Airport Rail Link guide covers every station), and trains run from 05:30 to midnight. Only the all-stations City Line operates; the non-stop express has been suspended since 2014. Trains come about every 10 to 11 minutes at peak times and every 12 to 15 minutes off-peak and at weekends. Fares from the airport rise by stop: Lat Krabang 15 THB, Hua Mak 25, Makkasan 35, Ratchaprarop 40 and Phaya Thai 45. Since November 2025 you can tap a Visa, Mastercard, JCB or UnionPay contactless card at the gates, and tokens are still sold, but Rabbit cards are not accepted. The MRT also takes contactless bank cards. The BTS Skytrain does not, so buy a single-journey ticket or use a Rabbit card for the BTS leg.

The rail link reaches the city at three useful interchanges, and each one needs a new ticket:

  • Phaya Thai, the end of the line. A covered walkway leads to the BTS Sukhumvit Line in a few minutes.
  • Makkasan. A 7 to 10 minute walk, with a security check and escalators, leads to Phetchaburi station on the MRT Blue Line.
  • Ratchaprarop, one stop before Phaya Thai, is the station for Pratunam.
  • Hua Mak. About 10 minutes on foot to the MRT Yellow Line, without a proper sidewalk.

There are no luggage racks, so big suitcases stand in the space by the doors.

The line had a difficult September 2026. The Nation reported on 9 September that worn wheels left only four of the nine trains needed for daily service available; trains ran every 15 minutes and replacement buses were used before the normal timetable returned. The operator is also changing. Asia Era One runs the line from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 under a temporary agreement signed on 29 September, and the SRT subsidiary SRTET is due to take over on 1 February 2027. The SRT says passengers will not be affected, and we found no reported disruption in October, but check service news close to your trip. A common rail fare, 17 THB to enter and capped at 45 THB per journey, was approved by the Cabinet in June and is targeted for 1 January 2027; once it is live, a rail link plus BTS or MRT trip should cost less.

Taxi into the city

A metered taxi suits arrivals at any hour, and it takes you to the door; the Bangkok airport taxi guide has fares by area. Take a queue ticket at the kiosk on Level 1, between Gates 4 and 7, and keep the slip, because it has the driver’s details. The meter starts at 35 or 40 THB, the driver adds a 50 THB airport surcharge, and you pay the expressway tolls in cash at each booth, usually about 25 to 75 THB on the way into town. A large bag over 26 inches can add up to 20 THB under Ministry of Transport rules, and the driver should tell you before setting off.

There is no official fare table to individual neighborhoods. Guides estimate about 250 to 350 THB on the meter to Sukhumvit or Silom, which comes to roughly 350 to 500 THB once the surcharge and tolls are added, and up to about 600 THB to the old town or the river. Rush hour and rain push it up, because the meter also charges for time when traffic crawls below 6 km/h.

Insist on the meter. If a driver quotes a flat fare, decline and go back to the queue, and ignore anyone offering a “taxi” inside the arrivals hall. Two electric “VIP taxi” services also work from Level 1, with a 150 THB flag fall.

Grab and other apps

Grab is the licensed ride-hailing partner of Airports of Thailand, and it picks up at Level 1, Gate 4, on the outer curb, 24 hours a day. In a press release on 21 September 2026, Grab Thailand said it had widened the Suvarnabhumi pickup zone to 12 lanes and added a PIN system at lanes A to D: you book, receive a four-digit PIN and give it to the next waiting driver. Grab says a one-month trial cut waiting times for PIN users by up to 40%. Its pre-booked Airport Pickup, with flight tracking, uses lane E, where drivers wait up to 15 minutes.

Guides put Grab fares to central Bangkok at around 400 to 600 THB, with surges at peak times and in rain; the app shows the price before you confirm, and you can check there whether tolls are included. Follow the pickup point in the app if it differs. Bolt’s licence was under regulatory review in mid-2026 and it is not an airport-designated operator, so keep it as a backup. You need mobile data before you walk out. For a full comparison of fares, payment and pickup rules, read the taxi vs Grab guide.

AOT Limousine

Walk-in counters on Level 2, the arrivals floor, sell fixed-price cars around the clock, with no queue and no meter. Published starting rates:

VehicleFrom
Eco Sedan (AION)550 THB
SUV (Isuzu MU-X)650 THB
Standard Sedan (Camry/Deepal)750 THB
Standard Van (8 passengers)850 THB
Premium Sedan (E350)1,000 THB
Premium Van (Vito)1,150 THB
Luxury Sedan (EQS)1,300 THB

The fare rises with distance from these starting rates. AOT Limousine is walk-in only, so you cannot reserve it ahead.

Buses: the S1 and others

  • S1 to Khao San Road and Sanam Luang. Level 1, Gate 7, 06:00 to 20:00, about every 30 minutes, reported at 60 THB in cash. It takes about 60 to 90 minutes and ends at Sanam Luang, a 10 to 15 minute walk from Khao San Road.
  • S6 (555) to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, 05:30 to 24:00, from the Public Transportation Center.
  • 554 to Rangsit via Ram Intra, passing Don Mueang, 05:30 to 22:00.
  • 558 to Central Rama 2, 04:45 to 22:30.
  • Public vans from the Transportation Center, including the 552B to BTS On Nut for lower Sukhumvit.

A free airport shuttle bus runs to the Public Transportation Center. Apart from the S1, these routes serve commuters, and for most visitors the train or a car is simpler.

Hotel pickups and meet and greet

Many upscale hotels sell chauffeured pickups at a premium; InterContinental Bangkok, for example, lists a Mercedes V-Class at 3,950 THB net one way. A pre-booked private transfer does the same job, with a name board in arrivals, help with bags and tolls included, for about a quarter of that at the prices we checked. Compare the two before you accept the hotel’s offer. If you also want a guide to walk you through the fast-track immigration lane, the VIP Fast-Track Arrival and Meet and Greet, rated 4.66 from 273 reviews, covers both Bangkok airports.

A private transfer to your hotel

A private transfer is a car or van reserved in advance. The driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and drives you to your hotel at a price agreed beforehand.

The OTO Trip Service private transfer from Suvarnabhumi, rated 4.58 from 557 reviews, prices one vehicle for your whole group. When we checked on 12 October 2026 the arrival option was $32.72 for a sedan carrying one or two travelers. Three or four travelers get an SUV and five to seven a van, at a higher vehicle price. Fuel, parking and tolls are included, with a bottle of water and a cooling towel for each passenger. Our full review of the OTO Trip transfer has the detail.

There are three alternatives. My Bangkok Holiday’s tolls-included car was $31.96 per car for up to two and has the most reviews of the transfers we compare. Dida Global’s city center transfer charges per person, $18 each for two travelers, and includes a porter, the expressway fee and 90 minutes of free waiting, but only serves hotels in the city center. Jub BKK Taxi’s Viator listing is $34 per car for up to three, with 90 minutes of free waiting (see our Jub BKK Taxi review). The private transfers comparison covers vans and meet-and-greet options for both airports.

Guides put the wider market for Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok in these ranges in October 2026. They are estimates across operators, not quotes:

VehiclePassengers and bags (typical)Guide range
Sedan1 to 3 passengers, 2 to 3 casesAbout 700 to 1,200 THB
SUV or MPV3 to 4 passengers, 3 to 4 casesAbout 800 to 1,500 THB
Van5 to 9 passengers, 6 or more casesAbout 1,100 to 2,000 THB

A private car usually includes meet and greet, flight tracking with waiting time for delays and expressway tolls, with no airport surcharge or meter. Check the waiting-time limit, child seats and any night supplement. A car beats a taxi for arrivals after midnight, families with car seats, groups (one van instead of two taxis), heavy luggage and long immigration queues, because your driver waits and you do not lose a place in the taxi line.

Practical booking checklist

  • Pickup location: Exit 3 on Floor 2, with your name on the steel railing near the escalator.
  • Waiting time: up to 2 hours after the pickup time for arrivals; overtime charges apply after that.
  • Tolls: toll, expressway and parking fees are included.
  • Luggage: the sedan takes two pieces. If your bags will not fit, book for more passengers to get an SUV or van.
  • Child seats: seats for ages 1 to 3 are THB 200 per seat each way, subject to availability.
  • Cancellation: free up to 24 hours in advance.

Which way to go, by neighborhood

Taxi figures are guide estimates for the all-in fare (meter, 50 THB surcharge and tolls) in normal traffic, as of October 2026. Times assume off-peak to moderate traffic.

  • Sukhumvit. Sukhumvit Road is long, so for a hotel far down the road with heavy bags, a taxi or private car saves two changes.
  • Silom and Sathorn. With luggage, a taxi or private car saves the walk between Makkasan and MRT Phetchaburi.
  • Khao San Road and the old town. No rail station sits on Khao San Road itself, so the bus or a car is the simpler ride.
  • Riverside hotels. The road is the direct route here, so a taxi, Grab or private car usually beats the rail link.

Airport-area hotels: the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (formerly the Novotel) runs a free 24-hour shuttle from its counter by Gate 4 in the Level 2 arrivals hall, and you can also walk there through the B1 walkway. The Courtyard by Marriott Suvarnabhumi Airport runs a free hourly 24-hour shuttle that you book ahead. Shuttles at smaller Lat Krabang hotels vary, and some charge, so confirm with your hotel. Our list of airport hotels with a free shuttle sets out each hotel’s pickup gate and hours, and our guide to staying near Bangkok’s airports compares the options.

Timing: which option at what time

Weekday rush hours run roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:30. Friday evenings and monsoon downpours (May to October) can add 30 to 60 minutes. The airport expressway usually moves; the last 10 km into the city is where traffic builds.

Time you clear customsRoad conditionsWhat to take
Morning rush (07:00 to 09:30)Heavy inboundThe rail link if you travel light; otherwise a taxi or car, and expect 60 to 90 min
Midday (10:00 to 15:30)Usually the easiestTaxi, Grab or a private car; the rail link is still cheapest
Evening rush (16:30 to 19:30, worst on Fridays and in rain)HeaviestThe rail link if your hotel is near a station; cars can take more than 90 min
Late evening (20:00 to 24:00)ClearingTaxi or a private car; the S1 has stopped and the last trains run around midnight
After midnight (00:00 to 05:30)Fast, often 30 to 40 minTaxi queue, Grab, AOT Limousine or a pre-booked car

Arriving after midnight

The rail link stops around midnight and the buses earlier, so after midnight you choose between the taxi queue, Grab (expect surges), AOT Limousine and a pre-booked car. Taxi queues are usually shorter late at night and the roads are quick. A pre-booked car means the driver is already waiting, you need no data or cash, and the price is fixed, which helps with children or after a long-haul flight. The My Bangkok Holiday car runs at any hour.

The reverse trip: central Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi

  • Taxi from your hotel or the street. There is no 50 THB airport surcharge in this direction, but you pay the meter plus tolls. Some drivers quote a flat fare for airport runs; ask for the meter, flag the next taxi, or ask your hotel to call one.
  • Grab. Book from your lobby; it works well for early-morning flights.
  • Airport Rail Link. The most predictable choice at rush hour, with trains from about 05:30. Board at Phaya Thai, the end of the line, for the best chance of a seat with luggage. Makkasan works for MRT connections, but trains can be full by then at peak times.
  • Private transfer. A fixed price with a scheduled pickup takes the guesswork out of the morning, which helps families and very early departures.

Aim to reach the airport 3 hours before an international flight. Allow 45 to 60 minutes’ drive off-peak, 90 to 120 minutes in the morning rush (07:00 to 09:30), and up to 150 minutes on Friday evenings or in heavy rain. The Suvarnabhumi Airport guide covers check-in, immigration and VAT refunds on the way out, and our guide to leaving for the airport has door-to-gate timings from each part of the city.

Connecting to a flight at Don Mueang? See Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang. Heading straight to the coast? See Bangkok Airport to Pattaya, the airport bus to Pattaya or Bangkok Airport to Hua Hin.

Landing at Don Mueang instead

Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok’s budget-airline airport in the north, works differently. A skywalk leads to the SRT Dark Red Line (about 33 THB to Krung Thep Aphiwat, then change to the MRT Blue Line). The A1 to A4 airport buses cost 30 to 50 THB: A1 to BTS Mo Chit, A2 to Victory Monument, A3 to Lumphini and A4 to Sanam Luang and Khao San Road. Guides estimate a metered taxi at 350 to 500 THB all in, with the 50 THB surcharge and tolls. The Airport Rail Link does not serve Don Mueang. The Don Mueang to Bangkok page and the Don Mueang Airport guide have the details, and terminal tips for Suvarnabhumi are in the Suvarnabhumi Airport guide.

Practical tips

  • After midnight the rail link and the S1 bus have stopped, but taxis and Grab run 24 hours, and a pre-booked car is waiting whatever the time.
  • Carry small baht notes for the taxi surcharge and tolls; there are ATMs and exchange counters near the rail link entrance.
  • Buy a new ticket at each change. The rail link, BTS and MRT do not share through tickets.
  • Children under 90 cm are reported to ride the Airport Rail Link free.
  • Send your flight number with a private booking so the driver can track a delay.

Quick recommendations

  • If you travel light and your hotel is near a BTS station → take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai.
  • If you are heading to Khao San Road on a budget and land before 20:00 → take the S1 bus.
  • If you are a family or group of three to seven → book the OTO Trip private transfer for one vehicle price.
  • If you land late or with heavy bags → book a private car, or take a metered taxi from the Level 1 queue.
  • If you are flying out from Bangkok’s other airport later → see the Suvarnabhumi transfer guide and Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang.

The train costs least and is the most predictable at rush hour, the official taxi is the cheapest ride to the door, and a fixed-price car suits a late landing, a family, a group or a first trip. Check the rail link’s service news before you fly, and have your hotel’s address in Thai ready for the driver.

What we checked

We compared private transfers from Suvarnabhumi into Bangkok on GetYourGuide and Viator by review volume, rating and how clearly each states its price basis, and checked real-date prices for two adults on 12 October 2026. Rail, taxi, Grab, AOT Limousine and bus details come from Airports of Thailand; the Grab pickup-zone changes from Grab Thailand’s press release of 21 September 2026; and the rail link’s service and operator news from The Nation, Bangkok Post and Thaiger reporting in September 2026. Hotel shuttle and limousine details come from the hotels’ own published information, and taxi, Grab and traffic ranges from 2026 travel guides, labeled as estimates. Inclusions such as tolls, waiting time and child seats vary by listing.
