From Your Hotel to the Gate

Pick a departure time, get the customs stamp if you are claiming VAT, check in, then clear immigration.

  1. Work back from your flight

Aim to be at the airport 3 hours before an international flight. From central Bangkok that means leaving 4 to 5 hours before departure in the weekday rush.

  2. Get dropped at departures

Suvarnabhumi departures are on Level 4. At Don Mueang, international flights leave from Terminal 1 and domestic flights from Terminal 2, both from Floor 3.

  3. Customs stamp, then check-in

If your VAT-refund goods total 20,000 THB or more, show them at the customs counter before you check in your bags.

  4. Immigration and the gate

Biometric passports can use the automated gates at both airports. Hand in VAT forms airside, then walk to your gate early.

Leaving Bangkok by Air: Timing, Transport, Check-in and Immigration

When to leave your hotel, the way to each airport, and the steps from check-in to the gate at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.

For an international flight out of Bangkok, plan to reach the airport 3 hours before departure. From central Bangkok that usually means leaving your hotel 4 to 5 hours ahead in the rush hour, about 5 hours ahead from Pattaya and 6.5 to 7 hours ahead from Hua Hin. Drop-off is on Level 4 at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Floor 3 at Don Mueang (DMK). Both airports have automated departure gates for biometric passports, and the 1,120 THB international Passenger Service Charge is already in your ticket.

  • Check your airport code first. BKK and DMK are on opposite sides of Bangkok, and Thai AirAsia flies from both.
  • In the weekday rush (about 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:30), the drive from the city to BKK can take 90 to 120 minutes, and up to 150 on a rainy Friday evening.
  • The first Airport Rail Link train runs at about 05:30. For a flight before about 08:30, book a car.
  • If your VAT-refund goods total 20,000 THB or more, get the customs stamp before you check in your bags.
  • Overstaying costs 500 THB a day, up to 20,000 THB, paid in cash before you leave.

When to leave for the airport

Bangkok traffic causes far more missed flights than the airports do. Treat the times below as estimates, and add a margin in the wet season (roughly May to October), on Friday evenings and before long weekends.

Rush hours run roughly 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:30 on weekdays. From Pattaya or Hua Hin to DMK, add 30 to 60 minutes to the BKK times, because Don Mueang is on the far (north) side of the city. Route details are in our guides to Bangkok Airport to Pattaya and Bangkok Airport to Hua Hin.

Metered taxi from your hotel or the street

Taxis are cheap and easy to find, but some drivers turn down long airport runs at shift change (around 15:00 to 17:00) or quote a flat fare instead of using the meter. Ask for the meter and expect to pay the expressway tolls in cash. The 50 THB surcharge applies only to pickups at the airport taxi rank, never to rides to the airport. If you book a taxi by phone or app, the usual booking fee is 20 THB. More detail is in our Bangkok airport taxi guide.

Grab and Bolt

The apps show the fare upfront and drop you at the departures curb. Between 03:00 and 05:00 cars are usually available in central districts, but you may wait longer for an XL vehicle, and prices climb sharply in heavy rain.

The train runs from Phaya Thai, where it meets the BTS, to BKK in about 26 to 30 minutes for 45 THB, from about 05:30 to midnight. The fleet has been stretched in 2026: in September, wheel inspections left four of the nine trains needed for the daily timetable available, according to The Nation and Thairath. Asia Era One runs the line under an agreement to 31 January 2027, and SRT Electrified Train Co. (SRTET) is due to take over on 1 February 2027; the State Railway of Thailand says passenger service should carry on through the change. Allow a spare 20 to 30 minutes. See our Airport Rail Link guide.

Getting to Don Mueang by public transport

The SRT Red Line stops beside DMK’s Terminal 1. To reach it, change from the MRT Blue Line at Bang Sue (Krung Thep Aphiwat). The A1 to A4 airport buses also run to DMK from Mo Chit 2, Victory Monument, Lumphini and Sanam Luang. Airports of Thailand lists A1 from 05:45 to midnight, A2 to A4 from 06:00 to 23:00, at 30 THB for A1 and A2 and 50 THB for A3 and A4. Those are the hours from the airport, so treat the city-side times as approximate.

Pre-booked private transfer

A pre-booked hotel-to-airport car makes the most sense in four situations:

  • your flight leaves before about 08:30, so you would need a pickup between 03:00 and 05:00;
  • you have children, car seats or a lot of luggage;
  • you are coming from Pattaya or Hua Hin, where a Bangkok meter taxi is not an option;
  • you have to cross Bangkok in the rush hour.

You get a pickup at a set time, a fixed price with the tolls included, and no haggling at the curb. For Suvarnabhumi, My Bangkok Holiday’s hotel-to-airport car was $31.96 for up to two travelers on 12 October 2026, rated 4.8/5 from 4,833 reviews. For Don Mueang, Blue Jade’s hotel-to-airport transfer on Viator covers both airports from $40, rated 4.8/5 from 67 reviews. From Pattaya, the Golden Dragon private transfer to BKK or DMK starts at about $42 (4.5/5 from 329 reviews). From Hua Hin, the OTO Trip private car between Hua Hin and Suvarnabhumi starts at about $81; it has 4.5/5 from only 25 reviews, so read the latest ones before you book. Families can compare vans in our family and group transfers guide.

Departing from Suvarnabhumi (BKK): step-by-step checklist

  1. Drop-off at Level 4. Tell the driver “departures”. Entrances 1 to 4 sit near check-in rows A to G, 5 to 7 near H to P, and 8 to 10 near Q to W. Screens at each entrance show your airline’s row.
  2. VAT customs stamp, if you need it. Go to the customs inspection counter at Entrance 10 before you check in (see the VAT section below).
  3. Check in. Rows A to W run along Level 4, and many airlines have kiosks and self-service bag drops. Counters close 40 to 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline and route, so check yours. Oversized items (golf bags, surfboards, strollers) go to the oversized-baggage belt near your row.
  4. Security and immigration. Both are behind the check-in rows. The automated departure gates accept foreign biometric passports. Use a staffed counter if you want an ink stamp, are traveling with small children, or have an overstay to settle.
  5. VAT refund office. After immigration, hand in your P.P.10 forms at the VAT Refund for Tourists office, and show any luxury goods you bought.
  6. Gates. For the SAT-1 gates (S101 to S128), take the underground Automated People Mover from the main terminal. Allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes in total. Gates often close 15 to 20 minutes before departure.

Airside you will find airline lounges, pay-in lounges on several concourses, and food courts and cafés throughout. Smoking is allowed only in designated rooms. For the full layout, see our Suvarnabhumi Airport guide. If you would like an escort through check-in, security and passport control, the I Asia Thailand priority fast track covers departures from $74 per person (4.5/5 from 446 reviews); our meet and greet guide compares the other services.

Departing from Don Mueang (DMK): step-by-step checklist

  1. Go to the right terminal. Terminal 1 handles international flights and Terminal 2 domestic ones. Both have drop-off on Floor 3, and a walkway links them.
  2. Check in early with a low-cost airline. Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air weigh checked and cabin bags, and excess baggage costs more at the counter than online. Their counters close 45 to 60 minutes before departure, depending on the airline and route, and they enforce the cut-off strictly.
  3. VAT refund. The customs counter and the VAT Refund for Tourists office are in Terminal 1, Floor 3. You still need the customs stamp before check-in if your goods total 20,000 THB or more.
  4. Immigration. DMK’s automated departure gates have run 24 hours since 5 March 2026. They do not stamp passports, and some travelers (young children, holders of very new passports) are sent to the staffed counters, which you can also use if you want a stamp.
  5. Airside. After immigration you will find Miracle and Coral Executive lounges, a food court and duty-free shops. Gates at DMK can be a long walk, so head to yours early.

More detail is in our Don Mueang Airport guide.

VAT refund at the airport: step by step

StepWhereWhat to do
1. ShopStores with the “VAT Refund for Tourists” signSpend at least 2,000 THB (VAT included) in the same store on the same day. Ask for a P.P.10 or e-P.P.10 form and the original tax invoice.
2. Customs (goods of 20,000 THB or more)BKK: Level 4, Entrance 10. DMK: Terminal 1, Floor 3Before check-in, show the goods, forms and invoices and get the customs stamp. Below 20,000 THB you skip this step.
3. Check inAirline counterKeep stamped forms and any luxury goods in your hand luggage.
4. ImmigrationPassport controlGo through as normal.
5. Refund officeAirside, VAT Refund for Tourists officeHand over your forms and show any luxury items (40,000 THB or more per item for jewelry, watches, phones, laptops and bags).
6. PaymentRefund office or VRT appUp to 30,000 THB: cash in baht, card, or WeChat or Alipay through the VRT app. Over 30,000 THB: card only. A fee is deducted, so expect less than the full 7%.

Your departure must fall within 60 days of the purchase date, or 14 days after a downtown refund. Downtown refund counters pay up to 12,000 THB in cash, but you still go to the refund office at the airport to complete the claim.

Departure tax and charges

You do not pay a separate departure tax at the airport. Airports of Thailand’s Passenger Service Charge is included in your ticket. It rose from 730 THB to 1,120 THB per international passenger on 20 June 2026 at all six AOT airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, Phuket and Hat Yai, according to the TAT Newsroom. The domestic charge is still 130 THB.

Immigration on departure: e-gates, overstays and visa rules

  • E-gates. At BKK, the departure gates have accepted foreign biometric passports since 15 December 2023. At DMK they have run 24 hours since 5 March 2026.
  • TDAC. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is needed only on arrival. There is no departure form to fill in.
  • Visa exemption. Under rules published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026, visa-exempt visitors from 60 countries and territories have been given 30 days instead of 60 since 15 September 2026, according to the TAT Newsroom. Check the permitted-stay date on your entry stamp before you book your flight home.
  • Overstay. The fine is 500 THB a day, capped at 20,000 THB, paid in cash at the airport immigration office before you leave. An overstay of more than 90 days also brings deportation and a re-entry ban, and Thai embassies say the ban gets longer the longer you overstayed. Bring baht and allow an extra hour.

Early-morning and late-night departures

Between midnight and 05:30 the Airport Rail Link is shut, the airport buses have stopped, and you rely on taxis and ride-hailing. These are usually easy to find in Sukhumvit and Silom between 03:00 and 05:00, and less certain in residential areas. For a flight before about 08:30, you have two good choices:

Late at night (after about 22:00) the roads are clear, and the drive from the city to BKK often takes under 45 minutes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Going to the wrong airport. Thai AirAsia moved its Suvarnabhumi routes to DMK from 15 July to 30 September 2026, and on 1 October brought back only Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi at BKK, according to The Nation and AirAsia. Check the airport code on your booking. If you are flying from one airport into the other, see our Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang guide.
  2. Checking in VAT-refund goods before the customs stamp. If your goods total 20,000 THB or more and you check them in unstamped, you lose the refund.
  3. Breaking the power bank rules. Under Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand rules announced on 4 June 2026, power banks travel in hand luggage only, never in checked bags, and you cannot use them or charge them during the flight. Some airlines also cap how many you carry, so check your airline’s limit.
  4. Liquids. In hand luggage, liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less, packed in one clear resealable bag. Duty-free bought airside stays sealed in its bag.
  5. Vapes. E-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand, and carrying one can bring a heavy fine or prison. Don’t carry or use one anywhere, including at the airport.
  6. Cannabis. Taking cannabis out of Thailand is illegal, even with a Thai prescription, and airport arrests for it are reported regularly.
  7. Cash limits. You can take out up to 50,000 THB in Thai baht (500,000 THB to neighboring countries) without declaring it. Foreign currency worth more than USD 20,000 must be declared to customs.
  8. Leaving Pattaya or Hua Hin too late. One accident on Motorway 7 or Route 4 can add an hour.

Final word

For a smooth departure from Bangkok, go to the right airport, leave early enough for the traffic, and do the VAT customs step before you check in. If your flight is early, you are traveling as a family, or you are coming from Pattaya or Hua Hin, book a fixed-price hotel-to-airport car the day before, and check your airline’s cut-off times, because they change.

This guide was checked in November 2026 against Airports of Thailand (Suvarnabhumi VAT refund and Don Mueang BMTA bus pages), the TAT Newsroom (Passenger Service Charge and visa exemption), the Royal Thai Embassies in London and Canberra (currency rules and overstays), The Nation and Thairath (Airport Rail Link operator and fleet), AirAsia and The Nation (Thai AirAsia routes), and news coverage of the CAAT power bank rules and the DMK automated gates.
