Which Airport?

Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang: Which Airport Are You Flying Into?

Bangkok has two commercial airports on opposite sides of the city. Your e-ticket names the one you land at, and the transfer you book depends on it.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK)

The main international airport, about 31 km east of central Bangkok.

  • One passenger terminal with seven concourses, serving international and domestic flights
  • The Airport Rail Link City Line runs from the basement to Phaya Thai
  • Metered taxis queue on Level 1; Grab uses its own pickup point on the same level
  • Coaches to Pattaya and Hua Hin leave from the Gate 8 area on Level 1

Suvarnabhumi Transfers

Don Mueang (DMK)

The second airport, about 25 km north of central Bangkok.

  • Terminal 1 handles international flights and Terminal 2 domestic ones, so check your e-ticket
  • The SRT Dark Red Line station sits opposite, linked by a covered skybridge
  • A1 to A4 airport buses run to Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Pratunam and Khao San
  • Taxis and Grab have named pickup points, set in March 2026

Where to Stay

Where to Stay When You Fly Into Bangkok

Most arrivals sleep near a rail link stop in the city; an airport hotel suits a late landing or an early flight.

Central Bangkok on the Rail Link

Phaya Thai, Ratchaprarop and Makkasan are Airport Rail Link stops 35 to 45 THB from Suvarnabhumi, with the BTS or MRT one change away. Pre-booked hotel transfers cover this area.

At Suvarnabhumi Airport

For a landing after midnight or a dawn departure from BKK. You skip the 31 km ride twice; the trade-off is that you are far from the sights.

Near Don Mueang Airport

For an early flight from DMK, about 25 km north of the center. The Dark Red Line station sits opposite the airport for a ride into town.

The Guide

Getting From Bangkok's Airports to Your Hotel

Two airports, four ways to ride, and what the price of a pre-booked transfer really covers.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about 31 km east
Second airport
Don Mueang (DMK), about 25 km north
Taxi surcharge
50 THB on top of the meter
Rail from BKK

Pattaya from BKK
About 127 km by road

Distances, taxi surcharge and rail hours: Airports of Thailand, Suvarnabhumi transport guide and Don Mueang airport page, checked 12 October 2026.

Bangkok has two airports on opposite sides of the city, and the road between each one and your hotel decides how your first hour in Thailand goes. This guide compares the ways to make that trip from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), and onward to Pattaya and Hua Hin, so you can choose before you land.

Two airports, two different transfers

Suvarnabhumi is about 31 km east of central Bangkok and runs from a single passenger terminal for international and domestic flights. Don Mueang is about 25 km north, with Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic ones. Because they sit on opposite sides of the city, a transfer booked for the wrong airport code is the costliest slip you can make. Check the three letters on your e-ticket first, then read the Suvarnabhumi airport transfers guide or the Don Mueang airport transfers guide.

Flying between the two airports is a separate problem, covered in Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang. Flying out instead? Our departing Bangkok airport guide covers when to leave, check-in and the VAT refund.

Private transfer, taxi or Grab

A pre-booked private car or van is the simplest option. A named driver waits in the arrivals hall, the price is fixed when you book, and there is no queue. It costs more than public transport and suits families, groups and late arrivals best. The private transfers comparison puts the main listings side by side.

A metered taxi needs no booking. At Suvarnabhumi you take a queue ticket on Level 1, then pay the meter plus a 50 baht airport surcharge, and you cover any expressway tolls yourself. Grab picks up at a designated point, and the app shows the price before you confirm. The taxi vs Grab guide explains where each one picks up at both airports.

The Airport Rail Link is the cheapest way into the city at 15 to 45 baht. It takes about 26 to 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai, but it stops running around midnight and you still need a way from the station to your hotel. Landing after midnight with an early flight out? One of the airport hotels with a free shuttle saves both rides. Route details are on the Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok and Don Mueang to Bangkok pages.

What the price of a private transfer covers

Listings quote prices in different ways, and the basis matters more than the headline figure. On 12 October 2026 the most-reviewed private transfer we found, Bangkok Airport: Private Hotel Transfer Free Tollway, charged $32 one way for a car for up to two travelers, with the expressway fee included (our review). That is a price per vehicle. Other listings price per person: a couple each pays the quoted rate, and a solo traveler pays a higher single-traveler rate. For three or more people, compare the vehicle price rather than the per-person headline.

Tolls, waiting time and child seats are where listings differ most. Some include the expressway fee and a fixed waiting period after your flight lands. Others leave them unstated or charge for child seats on request. Read the “what’s included” list before you book, and send your flight number as the listing asks so the driver can track delays.

If you are heading further out, private cars to Pattaya start around $45 and to Hua Hin around $81 to $86 per car, and coaches cost far less but run to fixed timetables. See Bangkok Airport to Pattaya and Bangkok Airport to Hua Hin, and for the drive between the two beaches, Pattaya to Hua Hin.

Quick recommendations

  • If you land late at night or with children, pre-book a private car so a named driver is waiting.
  • If you are traveling light in daytime and your hotel is near a BTS or MRT station, the rail link costs the least, at 15 to 45 baht.
  • If you are a group of four or more, price a van per vehicle, not per person.
  • If you are connecting between airports on separate tickets, allow more time than you expect.

What we checked

We chose the listings on this site by review volume, rating and how clearly each one states its price basis. Every card names the network, GetYourGuide or Viator, and every price is dated. We are an independent guide, not an airport and not a transfer operator, and we earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you. How a Pre-Booked Airport Transfer Works

From the baggage belt to the door of your Bangkok hotel.

  1. Book and Send Your Flight

Choose a car or van, then send the operator your flight number, arrival time and hotel address as the listing asks.

  2. Clear Immigration and Baggage

Collect your bags and walk out into the arrivals hall. The free waiting time after landing differs by listing, so check it before you book.

  3. Meet Your Driver

Most drivers hold a name sign at the meeting point named in your booking. Check the exact gate on your confirmation.

  4. Ride to Your Hotel

The drive to central Bangkok is about 31 km from Suvarnabhumi and about 25 km from Don Mueang. Check each listing for whether expressway tolls are included.

Book the Ride Back to the Airport

Departure transfers collect you from your hotel lobby at a confirmed time, so you are not hunting for a taxi on the morning of your flight. The most-reviewed listing we found prices one car for up to two travelers at $32 one way with the expressway fee included (checked 12 October 2026). Allow extra time for Bangkok traffic.
